Khác biệt với loài Cu cu bởi lưng trên màu nâu tương phản với đầu màu xám, vành mắt màu xám tối, mặt trên gần cuối đuôi có vằn ngang, rộng, màu đen. Chim cái ngực láng màu nâu, chim non khác chim non của các loài trong họ bởi vằn đuôi rộng. Tiếng kêu: 'bắt cô trói cột' (âm thứ tư trầm) lập đi lập lại và mỗi lúc một cao vút lên; tiếng kêu to, vang xa.
Male: Brownish tinge to mantle, wings and tail, prominent broad dark subterminal tail-band, wings and back, which contrast slightly with grey head. Orbital ring dull yellowish to grey-green eye-ring. Female: Rufescent wash across breast. Juvenile: Crown and head-sides browner than adult, with very broad buffsh-white feather-tips, prominent rufous/buffsh to whitish feather-tips above, buffsh below with broken dark bars, may have rufous-washed throat/breast.
