Chim trưởng thành có đầu, cổ, và ngực trên màu đen tương phản với màu trắng ở phần dưới cơ thể và vệt trắng chạy từ mắt xuống ở hai bên cổ. Mỏ đỏ, chóp mở màu đen; phần trên cơ thể màu nâu lục có ánh bóng màu tím và xanh lá cây. Chân màu vàng. Khi bay, lông cánh sơ cấp đen, dải rộng ở lông cánh sơ câp, lông bao trên đuôi và dải cách màu trắng, vằn ngang ở trên đuôi màu đen.
Adult: Black hood and upper breast, white patch on ear-coverts, red facial skin, black tipped red bill. Cold sandy greyish-brown above with narrow white band across upper mantle, whitish remainder of underparts, long yellow legs. In fight, prominent white wing-bar, blackish fight feathers, white band across rump and uppertail-coverts, mostly black tail with white corners. Juvenile: Duller hood, whitish throat, duller and reduced facial skin, duller bill and legs.
